Strokestown

Strokestown is well worth a visit. It is reputed to have the widest highstreet in the whole of Ireland (even wider than O'Connell Street in Dublin).

Of special interest is Strokestown Park. Strokestown Park is an 18th century mansion which has been tastefully restored and retains its original furniture and wallpaper.

There is a restored Georgian six acre walled garden. The Famine Museum explains, in great detail, the circumstances surrounding the Great Irish Famine of the 1840's. There is a restaurant and gift shop. The complex is open from March to October, seven days a week.
