"The Coarse and Pike Anglers Paradise!"
County Roscommon is well endowed with prime fishing rivers and lakes. Within a radius of 10 miles are some of the best-developed coarse fisheries. Styles, footbridges and excellent fishing strands, many of which have been erected by the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board, ensure there is good access to the many rivers and lakes.
The
Suck River Valley, only 5 miles away, has excellent stocks of bream to 8lbs
and roach to 2lbs. It is also renowned for pike.
The River Shannon, only 8 miles away, with its numerous inlets and backwaters, has well-developed stocks of bream and roach.
Lough Ree, about 10 miles away, is nearly 20 miles long and the second longest in the Shannon River System. It is noted for large pike, but also has bream, tench, hybrids and rudd. Bags of mixed fish to 100lbs for a day's fishing are not uncommon.
Slightly
further away, but within a radius of 30 miles, is the Boyle River System,
including
Lough Key. Here, the current Irish pike record of over 39lbs, still
stands. There are also good stocks of bream, roach, hybrids, pike and trout.
Numerous lakes surround Strokestown, the coarse angling paradise of the west. There are 65 lakes within a 7-mile radius. All these lakes have pike, perch, bream, rudd and some tench.
Lanesboro has excellent facilities for anglers and boasts the Hot Water Stretch, best fished April - June and September - October.
